Nissan’s Wireless Charger Fixes a Problem Other Cars Haven’t

Solving Smartphone Wireless Charging Issues

Smartphones keep getting smarter, and wireless charging is now something most of us expect. Carmakers caught on, adding wireless charging pads to new models – usually right in front of the cupholders or under the center stack. On paper, it sounds like a win. But in the real world, the experience can be hit or miss. Phones don’t always stay put, charging slows down, and heat builds up, especially if you’re on the road for more than a quick errand.

That’s the challenge Nissan set out to solve. Wireless charging – not the one introduced by the electric Porsche Cayenne – isn’t new, but making it work reliably in a moving car is another story. With the 2026 Murano and Pathfinder, Nissan is rolling out Qi2 wireless charging – the first time any automaker in the US has offered it. The goal: fix the alignment headaches and overheating problems that have made older in-car chargers more frustrating than helpful.

How Qi2 Changes the Experience

The most obvious difference with Qi2 is physical. The charging pad uses a raised magnetic ring to lock compatible phones in place. Newer Google Pixels, iPhones from the 12 onward, and Android devices with supported cases can attach securely with this feature, keeping the phone aligned even when the vehicle goes over rough pavement.

That secure fit isn’t just for show because if your phone gets misaligned by just a bit, charging slows down fast. The magnets keep everything lined up, ensuring consistent power. Nissan also added a built-in cooling fan under the pad. By keeping temperatures down, the system can keep charging at full speed instead of cutting back when things get hot.

Charging speed gets a boost, too. Qi2 can deliver up to 15 watts – triple what many older in-car chargers manage. With the cooling fan working in the background, Nissan says you’ll see much faster top-ups from a low battery. There’s also an LED indicator that shows when your phone is charging or warns you if something’s blocking the pad.

Where You’ll Find It

As mentioned, you’ll first see the Qi2 charger in two updated 2026 Nissans. The Murano gets it as part of a bigger push for comfort and tech in the midsize crossover space. The Pathfinder, which just got a comprehensive refresh, adds Qi2 to its list of smarter cabin features.

The 2026 Murano arrives with Qi2 as part of the lineup, and the Pathfinder with the new charger is set to hit dealerships early in 2026.
