How Uganda Is Rethinking Its Streets

Africa’s cities are growing faster than almost anywhere else on Earth—and with that growth comes gridlock, pollution, and deadly roads.

In Uganda’s capital Kampala, traffic congestion and air pollution are taking a heavy toll. Every year, thousands of pedestrians are injured or killed, while polluted air silently harms millions more. According to the World Health Organization, Kampala’s air quality is already outside safe limits.

Joseph Beyanga, also known as “Joe Walker,” campaigns for safer streets, car-free zones, and a radical shift in how the city moves. From pilot projects banning cars to school outreach and cycling advocacy, Beyanga believes walking and cycling can save lives—and change mindsets.

Can non-motorised transport really transform one of Africa’s busiest cities?
And could Kampala become a model for urban mobility across the continent?
