Rolls-Royce could have an electric Cullinan in showrooms before 2030

The luxury manufacturer is set to add its second electric vehicle to its line-up, a super-sized SUV which could be priced close to $1 million.

Rolls-Royce’s most popular model, the Cullinan SUV, looks set to go electric, with a new battery-powered model spotted testing in Scandinavia.

This EV will be the second offered by the manufacturer as it works to have a fully electric vehicle line-up by the end of 2030.

Wrapped in a camouflaged livery and tested in alpine conditions, the pre-production electric SUV shares similar proportions to the current petrol-powered Cullinan.

The test vehicle shows newly designed and positioned LED headlights and tail-lights; the rest of the styling is difficult to make out through the camouflage.

Rolls-Royce’s first electric SUV could have similar specifications to its first electric vehicle, the Spectre coupe, which produces 430kW and 900Nm from dual electric motors. The 102 kWh battery brings a claimed driving range of 555km based on European WLTP lab testing.

It could also use electric technology from other BMW Group vehicles, such as the new-generation iX3, which uses dual electric motors developing 345kW and 645Nm and a 108.7kWh battery, capable of 805km of claimed WLTP range.

Rolls-Royce is working towards fully electrifying its vehicle line-up by the end of 2030, which will see the company phase out V12 petrol engines, first used in its road cars in 1936.

The manufacturer has also pledged to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, a change also expected to be seen in its aviation, marine, defence, and power generation divisions.

Pricing has not been announced, but using the Cullinan as a guide, it is expected to cost close to $1 million drive-away once optioned.

Rolls-Royce is yet to confirm if the new electric SUV will replace or sit alongside the Cullinan. The new model is expected to be released in 2028.
