NHAI removes mandatory KYV for FASTag issuance while strengthening pre-activation vehicle checks
National Highways Authority of India has announced that the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process will no longer be mandatory for issuing FASTags for new cars, SUVs and vans. The revised rule will come into effect from February 1, 2026.
The decision has been taken to address concerns around inconvenience faced by vehicle owners, particularly delays that arose after FASTag activation due to post-issuance KYV checks. According to NHAI, many users were required to complete additional verification even after submitting valid vehicle documents at the time of purchase.
In an official statement, the authority said the change is expected to ease the process for a large number of road users who experienced disruptions despite complying with existing documentation requirements.
KYV to remain applicable in limited cases
While the KYV requirement has been removed for routine FASTag issuance, it has not been eliminated entirely. NHAI clarified that KYV verification will still be carried out in specific situations, including cases of incorrect FASTag issuance, suspected misuse or instances where a FASTag is found to be loosely affixed or improperly installed.
FASTags that have already been issued will not require KYV validation unless they fall under these exceptional categories.
Stronger checks before FASTag activation
To maintain system integrity, NHAI has simultaneously tightened pre-activation checks for issuer banks. FASTag activation will now require mandatory vehicle validation using the VAHAN database. This step is aimed at ensuring accurate mapping between the FASTag and the registered vehicle before activation, reducing errors at a later stage.
The updated process reflects NHAI’s attempt to balance user convenience with stricter backend controls, streamlining toll operations while minimising compliance-related friction for everyday highway users.
