Max Verstappen races Australian V8 Supercar: ‘A lot of fun’

The four-time champion has praised his first drive of a V8 Supercar, and has opened the possibility of a future start at Bathurst.

Four-time F1 world champion Max Verstappen has driven a V8 Supercar in anger for the first time as part of a new Red Bull and Ford promotional video.

Verstappen and Arvid Lindblad, driver for Red Bull F1’s sister team Racing Bulls, got behind the wheel of a fleet of Ford road and race cars, from the 1924 Model T and 1966 GT40 MkII to the new 2026 Mustang Dark Horse SC sports car.

The F1 stars went head-to-head in a series of challenges before a ‘showdown’ between Lindblad in a Mustang GT3 – similar to what is set to race in the Bathurst 12 Hour endurance race next month – and Verstappen in a Mustang Supercar.

The Supercar is wrapped in an F1-inspired Red Bull Ampol Racing livery, the factory team which will move back to Ford for the 2026 Supercars season, having raced Holden Commodores and, later, Chevrolet Camaros since 2010.

Red Bull Racing and its sister team, Racing Bulls, will move away from Honda-based engines to work with Ford for the 2026 F1 season.

The showdown, a two-lap battle for the fastest time, saw the Mustang GT3 beat its Supercar counterpart by three seconds.

“I had a lot of fun. I was just… I was, like, smiling,” Verstappen said of his experience.

The Dutch F1 champion has since expressed his interest in racing a Supercar at Bathurst.

In years gone by, several F1 drivers have tasted a Supercar. Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo, who makes a surprise cameo in the video, has driven Holden and Nissan V8 Supercars while racing in F1.

The list also includes Pierre Gasly, Jack Doohan, Sergio Perez, Liam Lawson, and, in a separate outing, Lindblad.
