Tata Sierra Diesel Variants Draw Majority Of Early Bookings

Diesel trims lead Sierra bookings, driven by wider variant spread and pricing

About one month after Tata Motors opened bookings for the Sierra midsize SUV, the diesel versions appear to be leading customer interest. According to dealer estimates, roughly 55 percent of total bookings so far are for the diesel trims. This trend is notable considering the growing petrol preference in the broader market.

Booking distribution shows clear diesel tilt

Bookings for the Sierra began on December 16, and the model reportedly surpassed 70,000 reservations on the first day. Current data indicates the following booking split:

  • Diesel: ~55 percent
  • Turbo-petrol: ~20 percent
  • Naturally aspirated petrol: ~25 percent

This distribution positions the diesel variants as the preferred choice for new buyers.

Segment comparison and variant strategy

The Sierra’s diesel share stands higher than segment rivals that still offer diesel engines, namely the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. The Creta sees around 44 percent of its sales from diesel, while the share is lower for the Seltos.

One factor influencing Sierra’s diesel demand is the broad spread of diesel trims. The diesel engine is available across the entire variant range, covered within a price span of nearly Rs. 10 lakhs. The diesel range starts at Rs. 12.99 lakhs and tops out at Rs. 21.29 lakhs (ex-showroom), with both manual and automatic options. Diesel accounts for 13 of the 25 total variants.

In comparison, both Creta and Seltos offer more petrol-led line-ups and restrict diesel variants to mid or higher-spec trims in certain configurations.

Petrol variants see split interest

The turbo-petrol accounts for about 20 percent of Sierra bookings despite being limited to the top two trims, available only with an automatic gearbox and priced from Rs. 17.99 lakhs onwards. The naturally aspirated petrol variants complete the remaining quarter of demand.

Engine options and pricing

The Sierra offers three powertrain choices:

  • 106 HP 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol
  • 116 HP 1.5-litre diesel
  • 160 HP 1.5-litre turbo-petrol

Transmission options include a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DCT for the NA petrol, a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic for the diesel, and a 6-speed automatic exclusively for the turbo-petrol.

Introductory prices range between Rs. 11.49 lakhs and Rs. 21.29 lakhs (ex-showroom). Deliveries are expected to begin from January 15, 2026.
